Blog > Top 6 restaurants to visit in The Gambia

Food is always one of the main highlights of a holiday and there is nothing better than trying local cuisine! We have put together a list of our expert's favourites.

Many of the team at The Gambia Experience have visited The Gambia on multiple occasions and have tried many of the restaurants both within hotels and on the main strip in Kololi, here are a few of their recommendations for you to try on your Gambian holiday. This isn't an extensive list of the fabulous restaurants in The Gambia, our reps will be more than happy to help with other suggestions or reserving a table. Taxis can also be booked with the option for them to wait while you eat, to drop you back at your hotel afterwards.

1. Gusto, Kololi

This is an Italian restaurant that is located on ‘the strip’ in Kololi. Enjoy delicious pasta and pizzas whilst in a relaxed atmosphere. Three friends opened the restaurant in 2017, each with many years of experience in the hospitality industry, with a shared passion for good food and drink. Our team recommend Pasta Alfredo, which is very tasty and reasonably priced.

2. El Sol, Kololi

A lovely Mexican restaurant located on ‘the strip’ in Kololi, you will find all the classic Mexican dishes you expect to find, quesadilla, chilli, fajitas, burritos and more! The service is great, and you will want to return! Some great hotels in Kololi include Senegambia and Holiday Beach Club.

3. Calypso at the Cape, Cape Point

This is a fabulous bar set in a stunning location overlooking the crocodile pool with a refreshing sea breeze. This is a great place to visit after spending time perusing the craft market in Banjul. Soak up the beautiful views with a cool drink and some delicious snacks or even a full meal before heading back to your hotel. On Sunday there are jazz musicians providing live music to sit back and relax to. There are some lovely hotels in the Cape Point area such as Ocean Bay and Sunbeach Hotel.

4. Leo’s Hotel, Brufut

This is a wonderful small, intimate hotel with just six rooms, however, the restaurant accepts outside guests, and you don’t want to miss the chance to sample their menu, so make sure to book a table one evening during your holiday. The food and service are superb, overseen by Nina and Alois, an Austrian couple who have run this gem of a hotel for the last ten years. As the hotel is near the Tanji fishing village, the fish that features on the menu is gorgeous and fresh and really is a treat! The fillet of Ladyfish and pan-fried Solefish with caper sauce is a delight! Browse the menu here.

5. Playa del Sol, Kotu Beach

This is a fun beach bar come restaurant and is a great place to hang out on your holiday. Open early for breakfast right through to 8 pm (the kitchen shuts at 7 pm). Seating is either on the beach or on swings up at tables – adding to the sense of fun! After eating, you can relax in hammocks or day beds on the beach. If you are visiting in the early evening, the tapas is great and they have some delicious desserts, the cheesecake is amazing!

6. Ngala Lodge

This is a wonderful restaurant to end your Gambian holiday in, it is a real treat and a slice of luxury. The service is impeccable, and the team are extremely friendly and attentive. The à la carte menu and extensive wine list make this a food connoisseur's dream. Whether you choose steak or seafood, the plates arrive looking like dishes on MasterChef professional! Head Chef, Assan makes an appearance after service, to great adulation from the restaurant. Ngala Lodge is a magnificent place to stay on your holiday, where you can enjoy the restaurant each night! It is perfect for couples, with a romantic feel, beautifully furnished rooms and quirky art pieces!

Book your holiday to The Gambia today to sample these great restaurants for yourself!
