Here we share some of our favourite photography of the birdlife in The Gambia. What will you get the opportunity to see when you visit?

With over 600+ species to witness, The Gambia is a fantastic destination for keen or amateur birders. To give you just a small flavour of what you could see when you head out with your binoculars, here's our top 10 birdlife photos in The Gambia... 


1. Little Bee Eaters, found in grasslands, thin scrub and forest edges.

2. Black Kite, can be found in protected areas such as Tanji Bird Reserve and Abuko Nature Reserve.

3. Hooded Vulture, sadly considered critically endangered, they can be found in coastal areas and near human settlements, where they may scavenge in dump sites.

4. Black Egret, they are often found in shallow, open freshwater habitats, such as Kotu Creek, Marakissa River Camp and other marshes.

5. Yellow-bill Stock, view them in wetland areas such as lakes, mudflats and reserves.

6. Black Wing Stilt, this species has a specific breeding site, found in various shallow lakes, marshlands and other wetlands.

7. Greater Painted Snipe, it calls places such as Kotu and Abuko rice fields home. They can also be seen along Allahein River and in the Tanji Bird Reserve.

8. Hammerkop, look for them near Kotu Bridge and the mangroves around the Kotu region.

9. Red-billed Firefinch, often found near villages and lodges, as well as open grassland and cultivated areas. They are often at popular birding spots such as Lamin Jetty and Kotu Creek.

10. Short-toed Eagle, often found along the north bank of the River Gambia and areas such as Tendaba and the Lower River region.
