Eco Tourism - Animal Watching & Plant Life
The Keur Saloum hotel is fortunate to be located in the heart of one of Africa's most beautiful ecosystems.
What's more, this immense territory covering about 200.000 hectares, with its intimate blend of sky, earth and sea, has been the subject of several national and international protective measures. It therefore deserves our protection as well. In fact, how could someone possibly spend a holiday in the Saloum Delta and not experience its natural and ecological riches ?
Of all places with ecotourism, Keur Saloum is at the top, with the relief of eminent biologists it has created an association "ecosystèmes" (see "Links")
This is why we are offering total immersion in this huge natural aviary where you can see, during both day and night, the many inhabitants of this pristine ecosystem.
We have several experienced guides to accompany you on foot, in our four-wheel drive vehicle, a canoe or on a watchtower, to help you to explore the environment to discover the numerous and variated the fauna.
You will find more big wild animals in Senegal, such as giraffes, rhinoceros, elephants, than wherever in East Africa, There are mammals in the water as well as on land, like porcupines, manatees, servals, hyenas, dolphins and see cows). Let's not forget the quantity of different apes hiding in the savannah, searching for fruit and pinda nuts (Patas or green Cercophitèque), rare Colobes or the Guinea baboon.
There is also the fabulous and extreme variation of avifauna : the sedentary birds are legion and sometimes unique such as the Great Abyssinian hornbill or the fish eagle and the multitudinous ardéidés (heron-like birds), the most spectacular specie is the goliath heron, and of course you will find the congenial pelican everywhere/
During winter millions of migratory birds (mainly aquatic birds) will fly to Senegal, looking for food in the mud when it is low tide.
The most spectacular attraction in ornithology is undoubtedly, an island in the Ocean nearby the opening of the delta, the "Ile aux Oiseaux". It is worlds biggest nest colony of the King Stern, also Caspian Sterns and herring-gulls.
We have a special program for ornithologists. With help and support of professionals we organise discovery days in the mangrove, ornithology lessons and sessions about ringing birds (see excursion program).
Briefly, Keur Saloum is an active defender of one of the most beautiful mangroves in the world, which has been conserved perfectly.
Our eco-wardens will also explain and show you the inner workings of the thousand-year old mangrove, the true life and soul of this pulsating world.
Moreover, we have a specific program for both beginning and more experienced ornithologists.
