Why choose The Gambia for your school or college trip?

The Gambia is a fascinating country that is sure to inspire and educate students in a multitude of ways. There are many aspects of the school curriculum that resonate with the culture and ways of life in The Gambia. The country boasts beautiful African art, alongside fascinating religious culture with special places of worship and religious practice.

Students will be able to understand the impacts of climate change on the country's seasons and environment, with a focus on the coast, fishing, weather and water. With tourism being one of The Gambia's main industries, it is a great insight for students to be able to understand how sustainable development is occurring in the country.

Students can witness family life and compare their homes to that of a typical residential area in The Gambia and they will have the opportunity to meet and converse with locals and visit a local school. The contrasts between food, lifestyles, wants and needs are fascinating, with issues around poverty and the developing world playing an important part in understanding these cultures.

Volunteering

There are many individuals and charities assisting school, wildlife conservation and social welfare projects in The Gambia. If your school group is looking to get involved with a charity or project, our team can assist with getting this organised.

Partnered schools

The Gambia Experience has assisted with several links between schools, colleges and universities in the UK and The Gambia. Our team can provide support to teachers looking to develop a partnership with a Gambian school. Partnering with a school in The Gambia is a great way for students to learn about education in a developing country, as well as to have a charitable project to support. It can also help to establish strong ties and years of continuing exchange visits. If carried out correctly, partnerships can have great impact on both schools involved with the partnership, it is highly regarded as a way of promoting student development and global understanding.

7 nights

Day 1
Arrival day - absorb a different destination on your airport transfer. Orientation walk and dinner in the hotel.

Day 2 - Cultural excursion
An off-the-beaten-track adventure following the coast and uncovering the Gambian way of life, including a visit to a local compound, craft market, sacred crocodile pool, and fishing village. Stops are made to observe the antics of chattering monkeys and the many exotic and colourful species of birds.

The afternoon is spent at your partner school where you will receive a warm Gambian welcome from the students and teachers.

Day 3 - A day as a Gambian student
Enjoy the day with your partner school. Pay a courtesy call to the local village Chief and Alkalo to introduce yourself and learn about the village hierarchy. Then get immersed into Gambian school life, taking part in the day's classes.

Day 4 - Makasutu Forest excursion
Visit the Makasutu Cultural Forest, a palm forest situated on a beautiful meandering tributary of the River Gambia. The morning is spent exploring the mangroves in dugout canoes followed by a nature walk through the forest hoping to catch a glimpse of a few monkeys, monitor lizards and possibly even baboons. After an African lunch, members of the Jola tribe will come to demonstrate their dancing and you will have the chance to join in.

Day 5 - Volunteeting
Support your partner school with a day of volunteering. From planting a vegetable patch, to painting a mural on a school wall, we can tailor-make your volunteering day to suite yours and your Gambian partner's requirements.

Day 6 - At leisure
Day at leisure in your hotel.

Day 7 - Farewells
Once more spend the day with your partner school, taking part in classes or finish your volunteering project. In the afternoon, it will be time to say your goodbyes and enjoy the farewell celebrations.
