The Kairaba is one of our most popular hotels, an old favourite offering a quiet and tranquil haven located close to Kololi’s vibrant heart.

Our Guest's Opinion

"The gardens (as ever) at The Kairaba Hotel are beautiful and a great place to relax. The local birds and other wildlife add to their glory."

- Mrs Freeman

What we love

  • The tranquil, manicured gardens really make this property stand out; watch out for the resident peacocks!
  • Superior Deluxe Rooms - large corner balcony and double aspect windows give a light and airy feel to these rooms.

Good to know

  • With a host of restaurants just outside, along with the hotel’s own dining outlets, cuisine options for Kairaba guests is endless.

The hotel’s prime location

A long-established favourite, The Kairaba Hotel enjoys not only a superb position alongside Kololi Beach, but is also just a stone’s throw from the bars and restaurants of Kololi, The Gambia’s largest and liveliest resort. However, you needn’t worry about getting that much-needed dose of relaxation at this property – with well-kept, beautiful gardens covering much of The Kairaba Hotel's grounds and a large feature pool, it’s not hard to find a quiet spot in which to sunbathe or witness some of the incredible wildlife.

Recommended room types

The Kairaba deluxe rooms that we use primarily are situated in two-storey buildings within the gardens; from your balcony or terrace you can enjoy views across the attractive lawns. Following feedback over the years, we recommend the Deluxe rooms with other popular upgrade options available – these are situated in Portuguese-style buildings overlooking the gardens and are superior in size, quality and location to the standard rooms.

Achieve ultimate relaxation

This property is all about peace and relaxation, which is only interrupted by the vervet monkeys and birdlife visiting from the nearby forest. There are no pool games or loud music during the day, although there is the occasional local band or entertainment in the evening. Due to its quality and range of facilities, The Kairaba is very popular with conferences, groups and private or evening functions for Gambian dignitaries and foreign Ministers of State.

Spoilt for choice when dining

When it comes to dining, you have a choice of restaurants on offer during winter, along with a wide range of restaurants within walking distance. Breakfast is served in the elevated Kingfisher restaurant, and the Malimbe poolside snack bar provides excellent lunches with the occasional themed evening buffet. There is a more informal atmosphere in the Casa Fernando bistro, often with accompanying music; half board may be served in any of the hotel restaurants although it's generally in Casa Fernando. Shikra à la carte restaurant is closed in the summer months.

About the Local Area (Kololi)

Kololi is by far the most established resort area. ‘The strip’ as it is known locally, consists of a number of bars and a couple of nightclubs, frequented by both locals and tourists.

There are a large number of places to eat serving a variety of cuisine styles - you can get anything from an excellent curry, a Lebanese dish or a more traditional Gambian meal. There are two casinos on the strip, not to mention a whole host of bars and clubs - all of which throb into the early hours, but may be quieter between May and October. The strip also boasts banks and exchange bureaus, internet cafes and shops. It is generally fairly relaxed in the day and really comes into its own at night.

Beaches

The beach outside the Senegambia, Kairaba and Holiday Beach Club hotels has a strip of sand plenty wide enough for sunbathing on, with sunbeds and parasols just outside the hotels.
