Found upriver in the northern region of The Gambia, Morgan Kunda Lodge is a non-profit organisation offering superb opportunities for visitors to explore the local wildlife and more.
The lodge was set up by Englishman Phil Morgan, founder of the Morgan Clark Foundation, with the aim of providing employment and support for the people of Jarjari Village where it is based. Over the years, proceeds have funded the building and running of a local school and helped fund maternity services. The villagers welcome visitors to their homes, and it is easy to wander around the local area to experience Gambian village life away from the coastal resorts.
Providing simple accommodation, the lodge has been gradually improved over the years and offers non-AC and AC rooms for singles, twins and triples so is ideal for both groups or individual travellers.
The restaurant serves simple food with fresh ingredients sourced from the local vegetable garden, and our prices are based on a full-board basis. Carbonated drinks and beer are available for purchase, along with tea and coffee. Please note that other alcohol is not available, though you can bring your own wine or spirits.
This upriver gem has developed a good reputation among local birding guides as an ideal base for discovering a myriad of species in the area. Sightings are possible of the rare Egyptian Plover, the White-crested Tiger Bittern and Martial Eagle, plus bustards, hornbills and sunbirds, to name a few. There is a viewing tower for guests, so you can make the most of your binoculars and photographic equipment! Local excursions on the river, where you may spot basking crocodiles, can be arranged locally, using the locals' knowledge of the best areas to spot your species of choice.
Situated on the north bank and close to the river crossing at Farafenni Bridge, it can be reached from the coast in approximately 3.5 hours.
