A small and friendly hotel in the Kotu resort, Sunset Beach offers two beachfront pools, a relaxed atmosphere and well-equipped rooms for this grade of property.
Our Guest Opinion
"Nice hotel with a lovely view of beach. Doesn't feel too big and the gardens are beautiful."
- Mr Osmond
What we love
- Its location close to Kotu Stream, making it an ideal base for birdwatchers.
- The uninterrupted views of the ocean from the pool and restaurant areas.
Good to know
- The course of Kotu Stream can be erratic, so beach access may at times be affected, although work has been carried out to minimise the impact.
- The hotel offers all inclusive during winter and bed and breakfast during summer months.
The charming Sunset Beach Hotel is sure to impress both new and repeat clients, as well as regular groups, who love the connection with the ocean, the well-tended gardens and the friendly atmosphere at this hotel.
Situated between the beach and Kotu stream, there's a laid-back atmosphere here with only limited activities in the daytime, leaving lots of time to relax and enjoy the Gambian sunshine. Two attractive swimming pools and sun terraces offer views over the ocean, with submerged sunbeds scattered around. The beach tends to vary in size depending on the course of Kotu stream so sunbeds are mainly within the hotel grounds, however, there is a small, sandy terrace directly outside the hotel where you can relax with a drink. At low tide, you will be able to access a long, sandy beach if you enjoy strolling along the shore.
The well-equipped rooms and apartments include air-conditioning as standard and are arranged in either single or two storey buildings within the tropical gardens. Self-catering apartments are also available with a separate living area and basic cooking facilities.
The bar and restaurant offer fabulous views, being perfectly placed to enjoy an early evening drink and watch the sunset, with the beach on one side and the pools on the other. It's open all day for snacks, evening meals are served buffet-style with live cooking, along with an à la carte menu and varied buffet breakfasts are also served here. A small conference centre above provides ample space for groups to meet.
Although Sunset Beach usually remains open year round, during the winter the hotel offers free yoga classes for beginners, giving you every reason to completely relax, and in the evening there are regular African cultural shows. The Sir Dawda Jawara - Fajara Club Golf Course is close by, and various amenities including a craft market and supermarket, beach bars and restaurants, are within easy walking distance in the Kotu area. The Gambia's liveliest resort, Kololi, is just a 10-minute taxi ride away and there is a taxi rank located just outside the hotel.
The location of Sunset Beach Hotel next to Kotu Stream makes it an ideal base for birdwatchers, and the huge variety of birdlife in the area means that it is often visited by not only birding guides but also BBC presenter Chris Packham when he visits The Gambia. With its good standard of accommodation and friendly service, this hotel makes for a perfect getaway for couples and families, but early booking is recommended due to the small number of rooms available.
