WEATHER IN THE GAMBIA

In November you can expect 8 hours of sunshine a day and average temperature highs of 32°C as the months of unbroken sunshine begin and the humidity starts to decrease.

The humidity is now much more comfortable and remains low throughout the winter and well into spring. On average days in December there are 9 hours of sunshine with temperature highs of around 31°C. Enjoy Christmas day relaxing on the beach while behind the scenes your festive celebration is being prepared.

The wonderful winter sun weather continues into the New Year making the Gambia a great setting for the annual celebrations. Some winter evenings can be a little chilly so do bring a light jacket or shawl.

February through to May sees the longest hours of sunshine, averaging 10 hours a day. Take part in our annual bird-watching tours and it’s your last chance to see birds such as the Egyptian Plover until well into the summer months.

March tends to be the hottest month of the year with average highs of 34°C, low humidity and 10 hours of sunshine. It’s sizzling!

Though slightly cooler than March, on average, April is still one of the hottest months of the year. However, humidity remains low and sunshine hours remain long.

You can still expect an average of 10 hours of sunshine a day in May, with temperature highs of 32°C and no rain. Beaches are wonderfully uncrowded at this time of year as there are fewer flights to the destination.

Most of June remains dry, usually with just the odd shower from the middle of the month onwards when humidity levels rise. Birds such as the Village Weaver take on their summer plumage.

This month really marks the start of the green season but showers are most frequent at night and are nearly always short in duration with the sun soon reappearing for an average of 6 hours a day from July to September. Expect temperature highs around 30°C.

August is generally the coolest month of the year but still averages highs of 29°C. It is also the wettest and most humid month; however, tourists tend to find the rain has little impact on their holidays.

Temperatures slowly start to climb with an average maximum of 31°C. Humidity remains high with short showers interspersing the sunshine and the sea and pool water is beautifully warm.

Although it is still humid with very warm evenings, the number of rain showers reduces and the amount of sunshine increases to a very respectable average of 8 hours a day. And you can expect temperature highs of 32°C.
