Itinerary 

Tuesday 21st January
Welcome meeting at the Pool Bar in Bakotu Hotel at 6.30pm.

 

Wednesday 22nd January MORNING
Meet in Bakotu Hotel reception at 6.30am for departure, Bakotu guests have tea and coffee at the Pool Bar, Bakotu Hotel.
Depart for Camelou Corner and Tambi Wetlands.
Areas include vegetable gardens and mangrove edge, walking is flat, generally dry with some wet sand, and is partially shaded.
11.45am – Crocs and cakes at Calypso bar and restaurant. 

Birds – Oriole warblers, Yellow-throated Leafbird, Snowy-crowned Robin-chat, Black Crake, Little Bittern plus farmland and wetland species
 

Wednesday 22nd January AFTERNOON
Meet in Bakotu Hotel reception at 4pm.
Depart for Brufut Forest to arrive by 4.30pm at Woodland Bar. Afternoon tea/coffee or soft drinks are available for purchase.
Areas include dry forest, scrub and vegetable gardens. Walking is flat, dry and largely shaded.

Birds – Verraux’s Eagle Owl, African Scops Owl, Gabar Goshawk, Green Pigeon, Long-tailed Nightjar and woodland species

 

Thursday 23rd January MORNING
Meet in Bakotu Hotel reception at 6.30am, Bakotu guests have tea and coffee at the Pool Bar, Bakotu Hotel.
Depart to Tujereng.
Areas include farm fields and scrub. Walking is flat, dry and largely open/unshaded.

Birds – Lanner Falcon, Dark Chanting Goshawk, Yellow-billed Oxpecker, White-shouldered Black Tit, Temmincks Courser, Spotted Thick-knee, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow Weaver, Wryneck plus scrubland species

 

Thursday 23rd January AFTERNOON
Meet in Bakotu Hotel reception at 3.30pm.
Depart for Tanji Creek for a three-hour pirogue trip with half-way break for tea/coffee or soft drinks.
Areas include mangrove creeks and woodland.

Birds – Goliath Heron, osprey, pelicans, spoonbills, cormorants, kingfishers and wetland species

 

Friday 24th January MORNING
Meet in Bakotu Hotel reception at 7am, Bakotu guests have tea and coffee at the Pool Bar, Bakotu Hotel.
Stay in Kotu area.
Areas include swamps, Badala Park pond, Kotu Stream, cycle track and rice fields (all on foot). Walking is flat with some wet sand, and open unshaded areas.

Birds – Painted Snipe, Black Egret, Cattle Egret Roost, waders, kingfishers and scrubland species

 

Please note this is a proposed itinerary but we reserve the right to make any changes as necessary. You will be escorted on your tours by Megan McCubbin and local award-winning guide, Malick Suso. Please ensure you take along your own bottle of water for both morning and evening tours.

Itinerary 

Friday 24th January
Welcome meeting at the Pool Bar in Bakotu Hotel at 6.30pm.

 

Saturday 25th January
Meet in Bakotu Hotel reception at 6.30am for departure.
Depart for Denton Bridge - riverboat cruise including breakfast and the opportunity to try fishing from the boat. The boat is covered with an open upper observation deck and has toilet facilities.
Area is mangrove creeks.

Birds – Goliath Heron, osprey, pelicans, spoonbills, kingfishers, terns and wetland species

At 12.30pm, we continue to Cape Point for time at Calypso bar and restaurant overlooking the lagoon with its birdlife and crocodiles. Refreshments are available for purchase.

Birds – herons, sandpipers and waders

Return to hotel at 3pm, afternoon at leisure.

 

Sunday 26th January MORNING
Meet in Bakotu Hotel reception at 6.30am
Depart to Mandina Ba
Area is mangrove creeks, walking is flat with some wet sand, open unshaded.              

Birds – Goliath Heron, osprey, pelicans, spoonbills, kingfishers, terns and wetland species

Continue to Farasutu (packed breakfast provided by Bakotu Hotel to have at Woodland Bar at around 9.30am). Areas include woodlands/vegetable gardens/fields/freshwater ponds.

Birds – Spotted Eagle Owl, White-backed Night Heron, Red-shouldered Cuckoo-Shrike, Four-banded Sandgrouse, Hoopoe, Golden Oriole, Black-shouldered Kite plus woodland and scrubland species

 

Sunday 26th January AFTERNOON
Meet in Bakotu Hotel reception at 4pm
Stay in Kotu Area.
Areas include swamps, Badala Park Pond, Kotu Stream, cycle track and rice fields (all on foot). Walking is flat with some wet sand, and open unshaded areas.

Birds – Painted Snipe, Black Egret, Cattle Egret Roost, waders, kingfishers and scrubland birds

 

Monday 27th January MORNING
Meet in Bakotu Hotel reception at 6.30am, Bakotu guests have tea and coffee at the Pool Bar, Bakotu Hotel.
Depart to Lamin rice fields, Tambi wetlands and Abuko Forest, Refreshments are available for purchase. Area includes vegetable gardens and mangrove edge. Walking is flat, generally dry with some wet sand, and is partially shaded.      

Birds – Pearl Spotted Owlet, Black Crake, Western Bluebill, Green Turacao, Paradise Flycatcher plus farmland and wetland species

2.30pm - Return to hotel for afternoon at leisure.
