Earlier this year, The Gambia Volunteers Trust held the 2nd Bajana International Marathon, which is now set to become an exciting, annual running and cultural festival.

Runners in the 2014 5km race, held in Bajana, Foni Berefet, came from The Gambia, UK, USA, Austria and Germany and included US Embassy staff, VSO and Peace Corps members, as well as the British Deputy Ambassador to The Gambia, George Sherriff.

The Challenge for 2015

The 3rd Bajana run, which will cover the longer distance of 10 kilometres, will be held on 4th April 2015. One of a new breed of races, the Bajana 10k, combines charity and travel, so visiting competitors can literally shake hands with the recipients of the money they have raised and see funded projects in action. There’s no minimum donation requirement, although most runners do aim to raise money for Gambia Volunteers’ nursery building projects in deprived communities. This charity run takes place in the village of Bajana, along the Trans-Gambia highway. It is a road run which starts from Somita Village ending at Bajana, enabling runners to see rural Gambia, while being cheered on by villagers along the way.

The Gambia Volunteers have challenged companies, business owners and those working for companies to sign up to Bajana 10k and fundraise at work towards the up-coming 2015 Bajana 10k. It is a great way to support the charity and have a fantastic holiday visiting charity projects as well as tourist attractions still with plenty of time for relaxing by the pool or beach if you wish.
