What to do in Sierra Leone?
Walk on the wild side
Visit the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, home to around 80 rare and elusive pygmy hippos and an astounding 11 species of primates – one of the highest primate concentrations in the world. Take to the river with a boat trip to see some of the many species of birds on the island. Or for the most adventurous travellers, you can also explore the caves in the nearby village of Niahun where bats (and historical spirits) live. Not to forget, the lushious rainforests which offer walking trails taking you into the home of the chimpanzees, red colobus and Diana monkeys.
View the city from above
Stand 548 metres above sea level on Leicester Peak and soak up the best views of the city, tumbling down to the Sierra Leone River and its many creeks around the peninsula. Or clamber up a mountainside, steeped on rare plants and buffalo, to take it the wondrous views from the top.
If you’re a first-time visitor, you can rest assured that Sierra Leone is miles from what people may expect from a ‘war-torn’ country. Feast of picture-perfect moments experience extraordinary culture of this beautiful, West African country.
