Enjoying a good reputation with its many loyal customers, African Village is renowned for its relaxed atmosphere and elevated location overlooking the ocean.

Our Guest's Opinion

"Although life and accommodation at African Village is simple, I cannot fault the friendliness and hospitality of the hotel. Second to none."

- Mr Murphy

What we love

  • The fishing village location offers opportunities to witness African life close to the hotel.

Good to know

  • Sea view rooms offer fantastic views directly overlooking the ocean, so it's worth considering an upgrade.
  • There's no natural beach but a sand-covered platform which allows you to soak up the sun at the water's edge.

Combining beachfront relaxation with tradition

Set close to the bustling fishing community of Bakau, African Village offers a relaxing place to soak up the sunshine and is an ideal choice for those seeking a more authentic African experience.

The pool area is where you'll go to make the most of the warm African climate, boasting a circular bar right in the centre. Alternatively, a sand covered, man-made sunbathing area has been created beside the ocean, complete with sunloungers and parasols. This is reached via steep steps, and offers access to the beach at low tide. There’s also a massage room at African Village if you fancy a relaxing treatment.

African-style huts

The rooms are comfortable and simply furnished, ranging from traditional African round huts to larger rooms with stunning sea views, together creating a traditional Gambian village ambience. The compact, colourful gardens are well-kept, and little walkways weave amongst the guest rooms adding further to the property’s Gambian characteristics.

Dining with a view

The restaurant boasts a vibrant atmosphere in the evening, and has stunning sea views from its elevated position. If you wish to experience more of the local area, there are a number of local bars and restaurants close by, as well as a busy market.

This hotel is particularly popular for educational groups, as the location offers the opportunity to discover more about the Gambian way of life.

About the Local Area (Bakau)

Bakau is a bustling town with a maze of small dirt roads and is an ideal area to experience the real Africa.

There are a few restaurants serving traditional Gambian dishes along with banks, supermarkets, post office and the popular Kachikally crocodile pool. There is a very good craft market and local fruit and vegetable market although the more famous fish market is also situated in Bakau.

Beaches

This area of coastline is quite dramatic with red rock cliffs interspersed with small beaches. Care should be taken if swimming in this area.
