A quality, well-established property with excellent facilities and spacious tranquil gardens. The appeal of The Kairaba lies in the serene atmosphere and prime location in the popular resort of Kololi.

A long-established favourite, it’s hard to choose one particular feature of The Kairaba to describe its allure as there are so many reasons why more of our guests return to this hotel than any other. It enjoys a prime position beside Kololi beach (despite the ongoing erosion from the strong Atlantic currents, sunbeds are still available; there are now a few steps down to the long sandy beach which can be accessed at low tide); the tranquillity of the spacious grounds with resident wildlife are enticing whilst the many bars and restaurants of Kololi, The Gambia’s largest and liveliest resort, are a only stone's throw away.

The Kairaba's bedrooms are situated in two-storey buildings within extensive bougainvillea-filled gardens; from your balcony or terrace you can enjoy the gentle sea breeze and views across the attractive lawns. Following client feedback we continue to base our holidays on the Deluxe rooms as we feel these rooms are more in keeping with our customers' requirements; these are situated in two-storey Portuguese-style buildings overlooking the gardens and are superior in size, quality and location. Standard rooms located close to the hotel entrance are available at a discount; other tour operators feature these as standard, or even rooms overlooking the car park (not offered by The Gambia Experience). Superior deluxe rooms with their large picture windows, and Premium suites with a separate double bedroom, always prove to be extremely popular, especially with repeat guests, so early booking is strongly recommended.

This hotel is all about peace and relaxation, which is only interrupted by the vervet monkeys and birdlife visiting from the neighbouring forest. There are no pool games or loud music during the day to disturb guests, croquet is more in keeping with the tranquil tone of the hotel although there is the occasional local band or entertainment in the evening. Due to the quality and range of facilities within the hotel, The Kairaba is very popular with conferences, groups and private or evening functions for Gambian dignitaries and foreign Ministers of State.

When it comes to dining, you have everything from à la carte to an extensive buffet during winter and several dining packages. Breakfast and the half board buffet are served in the elevated Kingfisher restaurant, allowing you to start your day feasting on views over the gardens as well as on freshly cooked delights. The Malimbe poolside snack bar provides excellent lunches, along with occasional themed buffet evenings. Shikra, the hotel's à la carte restaurant, provides an air of sophistication and this year will offer an Indian menu in addition to more traditional specials; alternatively there is a lively and informal atmosphere in the outside African bistro, and Tropicana Bar (was Havana Club). From May to October half board is served in Casa Fernando's bistro (now renamed Africana Restaurant). If you prefer to sample the local cuisine you also have an excellent variety of fine restaurants on your doorstep just a few minutes’ walk away in Kololi - along with the hotel's very own coffee shop and ice cream parlour which now also serves delicious pizza along with paninis and waffles.

If you like the idea of sumptuous buffets within the hotel, but also relish the opportunity to try the local cuisine, The Kairaba is offering a flexible half board package exclusively for our guests.  This 'Bon Appetit' package includes 4 buffet dinners per week, leaving you free to dine at your leisure for the remainder of your holiday. Or why not try our popular 'Wine and Dine' package? There is something to suit everyone at The Kairaba.

With its beachfront location in the heart of Kololi and wide range of facilties within a tranquil setting, this is a very popular choice of hotel. The Kairaba is often fully booked so we suggest booking early to secure your preferred dates and room type.

About the Local Area (Kololi)

Kololi is by far the most established resort area. ‘The strip’ as it is known locally, consists of a number of bars and a couple of nightclubs, frequented by both locals and tourists.

Kololi could probably be called the heart of the tourist industry in The Gambia with a selection of different grade hotels and some of the country's best restaurants.

There are a large number of places to eat serving a variety of cuisine styles on the Kololi strip - you can get anything from an excellent curry, a Lebanese dish or a more traditional Gambian meal. There are two casinos on the strip not to mention a whole host of bars and clubs - all of which throb into the early hours, but may be quieter between May and October. The strip also boasts banks & exchange bureaus, internet cafes and shops. It is generally fairly relaxed in the day and really comes into its own during the evening and night.

Beaches

The beach outside the Senegambia and Kairaba hotels is suffering from some erosion since the sand was replenished in 2003; currently there is a strip of sand plenty wide enough for sunbathing on, with sunbeds and parasols, just outside the hotels, however the beach then drops a level for access to the ocean with temporary steps provided outside The Kairaba Hotel.
