For adventurous travellers who want to experience more of West Africa, we can put together tailor-made itineraries staying at two or more hotels either within The Gambia or Senegal, or combining these two neighbouring countries. Our Senegal product manager, Alison Collins, gives her suggestions.

Luxury twin centre itinerary

Day 1 Fly from Heathrow, Manchester, Bristol or Birmingham to Dakar (via Brussels)

On arrival at Dakar you will be met by our representative who will show you to the transfer vehicle which will take you on the 21/2 hour journey through the sprawling city of Dakar to the resort of Saly, a vibrant fishing port and popular holiday resort with palm-fringed beaches and a good choice of bars and restaurants.

Day 2-7 Staying at the beachfront 5* Lamantin Beach Hotel you can relax around the large feature swimming pool or on the hotel's private sandy beach. A choice of water sports* are available on the beach and the Saly Fishing Club operates deep sea fishing trips* from the hotel's own marina. To truly pamper yourself, you can treat yourself to a treatment at the hotel's Thalassotherapy Spa*. You will be staying on a half-board basis in an African style thatched bungalow set amongst the gardens. Away from the hotel you can enjoy a variety of excursions including a trip to see a wide variety of wildlife in the nearby Bandia Nature Reserve.

Day 8 Your driver will collect you from your hotel for the drive south through the Senegalese countryside through the border with The Gambia, before continuing to Barra on the north bank of the impressive River Gambia, which is three miles wide at this point. From here you will take the ferry across the river to Banjul; this is an experience in itself as your fellow passengers are likely to include cattle, goats, chickens and various other animals along with locals crossing on their daily business.

Day 8-13 Staying at the luxurious Coco Ocean Resort & Spa you will be able to spend your days relaxing in one of the hotel's beach cabanas, lazing beside one of the pools or venture out on one of the many excursions* which include cruising the waterways in an African pirogue, visiting a local school and village or travelling upriver to the land of Alex Haley's "Roots". Staying on a bed and breakfast basis you will be able to sample the hotel's excellent cuisine and also experience the restaurants and nightlife in nearby Kololi, The Gambia's liveliest resort which is just a 5-minute drive away. The hotel has a fabulous spa where you can once again pamper yourself before your return flight from Banjul to London Gatwick or Manchester.
