17 July 2006 - The Gambia Experience - Press Office
The Gambia Experience is pleased to announce that for the second year running one of its nominated charity projects has been awarded an AITO grant of £1,000.
The Methodist Lower Basic School in Janjanbureh Town in The Gambia was put forward by the specialist tour operator and receives the AITO cheque, which will finance much needed building work for its new kitchen and school garden.
As an AITO member, The Gambia Experience was asked to nominate a charity project, which it believed would benefit from AITO’s Responsible Tourism funds. Grants in the region of £1,000 were available for projects that either have a direct tourism link or help improve the economic or social well being of local people in tourist destinations.
“The Gambia Experience founded its School Development Fund in 1989 and thus has always demonstrated a commitment to improving educational facilities in The Gambia. The building work needed at The Methodist Lower Basic School will total around £2,600 and The Gambia Experience will meet those extra costs from its charity fund” said Gill Sealey, The Gambia Experience Responsible Tourism Representative.
Dick Sisman, AITO's Responsible Tourism Advisor adds: "As a regular visitor to the Gambia I am fully aware of the importance of education as a means of helping the Gambia to develop to its full economic and social potential. I know that The Gambia Experience has shown a long and sustained commitment towards schools in the Gambia and I am delighted that on this occasion AITO has been able to both support and recognise this work.”
