What We Think
The Ocean Bay sits within beautiful gardens in a beachfront setting. This popular hotel offers a good range of facilities - now with a successful all-inclusive light option - and is a great choice for families or couples looking to simply relax and enjoy the Gambian sunshine.
The large swimming pool is the focal point of the hotel and for families there is a shallow area of the pool, a playground and babysitting can be arranged upon request. The hotel is located next to the beautiful Cape Point Beach and maintains an area which is well serviced from the beach bar.
Since November 2012 we have been offering Deluxe rooms as standard, with smaller standard rooms still available at a reduction. Upgrades to suites are also possible for a supplement. Deluxe rooms are furnished in dark wood and provide a high standard of accommodation and can accommodate 3 people. They are arranged in two storey buildings throughout the gardens and are equipped with telephone, television with video channel, hairdryer, mini-bar, safe, air-conditioning and private balcony or terrace.
Daytime activities include table tennis and other outdoor sporting activities plus there is a children's play area. After dinner you can enjoy a full programme of evening entertainment in winter with live music, shows and African dance troupes, and occasional entertainment during summer months.
Within the hotel there is a choice of two restaurants, one serving buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner, including Gambian delicacies, and the Ocean Clipper à la carte (open during winter only), which is in an unrivalled position next to the ocean. Drinks are available from the elegant lounge, beach bar or pool bar with its own pizza oven. Since winter 2011/12 there has been an all-inclusive light upgrade option which is proving very popular, including 3 buffet meals accompanied by two selected alcoholic or soft drinks with lunch and dinner (which may be taken at another time of day if preferred), plus complimentary soft and hot drinks throughout the day.
We recommend sampling the homemade lemongrass tea at the Ocean Bay Hotel which they grow, dry and make into the most refreshing iced tea drink - it's like a non-alcoholic cocktail. You can also buy packets of the tea to take home as a souvenir.
In the vicinity, there are a couple of other hotels, local bars, small restaurants, shops and a craft market all within easy reach and the popular resort of Kololi is only a 15 minute taxi ride away. The hotel's official rating has recently been reclassified as 4+, however we believe our 4* rating based on customer feedback and our own assessment still reflects the facilities and service offered.
Please note that a cash-free system within the hotel is in operation so that payment for all services and food/beverages are made via reception - as with many Gambian hotels, credit cards are no longer accepted so traveller's cheques/cash is the best option, however there are ATM machines which accept Visa cards in the vicinity.
