The eighth edition of the Plymouth to Dakar Challenge is now underway with the first of the groups leaving Plymouth on 18th December. The Challenge, which actually finishes in Banjul, The Gambia, involves teams travelling approximately 3700 miles in old cars costing just £100. On arrival in The Gambia the cars are auctioned off and the funds donated to local charities.
The Challenge travels from the UK to Spain and on to Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal with a two-day crossing of the Sahara Desert. The journey normally takes around three weeks and this year there are three groups heading to Banjul: the first left on 18th December, the second on Boxing Day and the final group will be leaving on 8th January 2010.
Each year the rally proves extremely popular and applications for next year have already closed, although the organisers do say they may be able to squeeze in an extra team on to certain groups. To find out more visit www.plymouth-dakar.co.uk
