The Gambia Federation of the Disabled (GFD) has recently held a meeting to elect new members of the board and debate new plans for 2008.
The organisation, which is based in Serrekunda in the east of the country, represents the participants of eight registered organisations for disabled people currently based in the country.
Its common aim is to increase disabled people's integration into Gambian society.
As reported by The Point, Dr Malick Njie, the secretary of state for Health and Social Welfare, was present at the meeting and has congratulated the government for supporting the UN Convention on the promotion and protection of the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
The meeting, which was the federation's third congress for this year, took place in the hall of the Gambia Organisation of the Visually Impaired.
Dr Njie has also taken the opportunity to thank several international organisations such as Sight Savers International and African Decade for their constant support.
