UK-based charity Friends of the Gambia constantly attracts more and more tourists wishing to give back more to the country they love.
These include John and Christine Carter who have been to the Gambia many times in the past 12 years and who decided to raise funds to build Tallinding Central Nursery School in 2004, reported the Gazette.
The total cost of the project was £5,000 for which donations were collected from several businesses including Dursley Lions Club and Berkeley Hunt Agricultural Society.
The school currently employs three teachers and a head and offers training on dress-making, cookery and computer keyboard skills.
The couple have joined Friends of the Gambia since, and are now planning the construction of a new health clinic.
Mr Carter said: "Now we are working on a clinic, but it is more difficult because it has to be air conditioned. We are going to use solar panels because sun is the one thing there is a lot of."
Friends of the Gambia was set up 18 years ago and became a UK registered charity in 1995.
