The British High Commissioner to the Gambia has praised the close links between the two countries.
Philip Sinkinson made the comments in a weekend speech at a ceremony marking the bestowal of equipment on the new children's wing at a Bansang hospital, the Point reports.
Mr Sinkinson highlighted the work of Anna Smith, who took responsibility for the hospital project, as an example of the "warm and close relationship" between Britain and the Gambia.
He also pointed out the role of tourism in this bond, with the number of British visitors to the west African country approaching 60,000.
The high commissioner also spoke about a range of projects in the region that have British backing, including a school opened by the Don McMath Foundation in the Kombos and the adoption of the village of Soma by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire.
Leeds Metropolitan University recently announced plans to collaborate with the University of The Gambia on a new Masters Programme.
