The Gambia Library and Information Services Association (GAMLISA) has just celebrated its 20th birthday with a three-day book festival.
Abdou Karim Sonko, representative of the secretary of state for GAMLISA, presented a paper at the celebration, reports allAfrica.com.
Mr Sonko is campaigning to raise awareness of his profession in the Gambia and also working to set up educational programmes for practitioners and users.
Elie Bahoum, an executive member of GAMLISA, said the Association had enjoyed a string of successes, including affiliating to its international sister organisation, setting up documentation centres and conducting training programmes for its personnel.
Jainaba Faal, there on behalf of the Director of National Aids Secretariats, expressed her organisation's support for the HIV/AIDS awareness projects developed by GAMLISA.
Finally, Adama Cupah from African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights highlighted the Association's work to foster cooperation between those working in the library and information services in The Gambia and beyond.
