I'd never considered The Gambia before when thinking about winter sun holidays but it was the perfect choice

The Gambia has some great beaches and is aptly named the 'The Smiling Coast'.

The tropical sunshine and uncrowded coastline make it a wonderful destination for a holiday.  You could easily find yourself whiling away the hours relaxing on one of Gambia's palm-fringed beaches.

Main Resort Beaches

The main beaches in the resort areas are as follows:

Bijilo Beach

This is a wonderfully unspoilt long sandy stretch of sand with only a couple of smaller hotels here and no beach bars or restaurants. It is really empty except for the odd fruit seller - perfect for a relaxing day.

Kololi

The beach outside the Senegambia and Kairaba Hotels is currently a wide area of sand leading down to the ocean.

Kotu

Another wide sandy beach which is fairly flat although not a very deep beach in terms of distance to the ocean. The area outside the Sunset Beach can change quite dramatically depending on the direction of the Kotu stream.

Bakau/Fajara

This area of coastline is quite dramatic with red rock cliffs interspersed with small beaches. Care should be taken if swimming in this area.

Cape Point

A magnificent large sandy beach. Groynes have been built to stop any erosion of the sand.

Travelling South...

Brufut

This is an unspoilt sandy beach.

Sanyang

The beach here is fairly sheltered but has some rocky areas wth beach bars dotted along the bay - very popular for a day trip.

Gunjur

Gunjur beach is ideal to watch local fisherman when the boats come in. For sunbathing you may need to move away from the activity to avoid upsetting the locals.

South Gambia & Kartong

Further south along the Atlantic coast you can be assured of some secluded and deserted beaches. The sand is golden with varying widths as you travel along the coast , although primarily used by local fishermen to land their boats. Be sure to find a secluded spot if wearing swimwear to avoid offending the locals.
