The most popular options are combining a hotel on the beach with a few days at one of the Unique Collection lodges, such as the new Sitanunku Lodge, to experience the culture and wildlife of The Gambia. However, we are finding that an increasing number of holidaymakers are choosing tailormade holidays of two or more Unique Collection properties as transfers by both road and boat are relatively short. During this week-long holiday you will get a real flavour of the wildlife and culture of The Gambia. First travel by boat to one of only 10 spacious lodges at Sitanunku Lodge where you can fish (novices welcome), canoe to nearby Dog Island and enjoy birdwatching – or just sit back and relax by the pool or in the tranquil gardens beside the impressive River Gambia.The second part of the holiday is spent in Omakan Hotel is a boutique hotel with just 13 suites; the service and cuisine is excellent but the other attraction is that it is set in a village and the hotel’s friendly staff will happily take you out to explore the surrounding streets, schools, workshops and teach you about life in The Gambia.

In Summer 2011 The Gambia was featured on the Channel 4 programme Holiday Hijack in which four ‘unsuspecting’ holidaymakers were taken from their luxurious accommodation and shown the realities of every day life in the country. We’ve had a lot of interest from customers wanting to learn about sustainable tourism and with this holiday you can experience the luxury of Coco Ocean and then stay at Sandele Eco-Retreat and Mandina Lodges both of which offer a high standard of accommodation whilst working with the local communities and minimising their impact on the environment.Based on Tuesday departures. Friday departures would be 4 nights Sandele followed by 3 nights at Mandina.

If you’re looking for a holiday to escape everyday life and truly relax, this could be the perfect holiday for you. The first three days of the holiday are spent at Sitanunku Lodge on the north bank of the impressive River Gambia where you can do as much or as little as you wish. From here it is possible to take days trips to the nature reserves in neighbouring Senegal or travel upriver to the former slave trade post at Albreda, but you may just prefer to spend the time fishing, birdwatching and relaxing in the spacious grounds. The final four days are spent at Mandina Lodges where you can enjoy walks through the forest to spot baboons, monkeys and birdlife; take canoe trips along the river; visit the village street art project Wide Open Walls or simply relax by the swimming pool.
