Tanji Fishing Village
A trip to Tanji fishing village always seems to sum up The Gambia - a riot of colour and smiling faces, a insight into a true sense of community and also the ways in which the people of the country lead their daily lives.
The bringing in of the fish usually occurs in the early-to-mid afternoon, so we advise arriving here for around 1 o'clock - this ensures you'll see the various boats coming in and be able to see the frantic activity in the smoking sheds. The best way to experience things is simply to 'be' amongst everything - wander through the village and you'll soon get an idea of the processes happening all around you. We also ask that you always maintain a respectful attitude towards the people and their work. You may find some people are against having their photos taken, so do ask before you start snapping away.
