Juffure Village
1 of 1: Juffure Village

Juffure Village

Juffure is an unremarkable fishing village of thatched mud-brick huts just a short distance inland from the banks of the River Gambia.

Yet it is a village that has international renown as it is to Juffure that Alex Haley traced his ancestral roots and discovered that it was from here that his great-great-grandfather had been abducted into slavery in the 18th century.

As such the village has a strange mix of the quotidian and the extraordinary and is well worth a visit to get a sense of the history of slavery at one of its many wellsprings. There are short talks in the village and you can visit the museum, which is out of the village towards Albreda.
