Fajara Military Cemetery
1 of 1: Fajara Military Cemetery

Fajara Military Cemetery

Hidden away in a corner of Fajara, unbeknownst to most people, there resides a Commonwealth War Graves Commission-maintained military cemetery. During World War 2, many Gambian soldiers fought for the Commonwealth and Banjul was a training camp for soldiers before they entered full military service. The cemetery contains some 215 graves, and is a startling, sobering and eye-catching place - the glare of the sun on the bone-white grave stones and the intensity of the silence that seems to hang over everything combining to make an experience quite unlike any other in The Gambia.

If you wish to visit the cemetery, the best thing to do is hail a taxi and ask for the Fajara War Cemetery on Kairaba Avenue/Pipeline Road. It is around a 10 minute journey from Kotu and 15 minutes from Kololi.
