Brufut Woods

Brufut Woods

Brufut Woods is subtle in its charms, but this community-organised bird sanctuary (protected by the West African Birds Study Association) is extraordinary in its abundance of wildlife, and the guides here are genuine experts in their field - if you're after a certain bird, you can be sure they'll help you seek it out.

Just to give you an idea of what you might see at Brufut, the following birds have been reported there: Long-tailed Nightjar, White-faced Scops Owl, Dark-chanting Goshawk, Lanner Falcon, Abyssinian Roller, Pallid Swift, Brown-backed Woodpecker, Grey-backed Camaroptera, Splendid Sunbird, Fanti Saw-wing, Senegal Eremomela, Lizard Buzzard and plenty more besides!

Brufut Woods are a short drive inland from the coast and can be reached from the resort areas in around 20 minutes or so - and the drive is quite something, through ground nut plantations and dusty suburbs. You could also combine this trip with a visit to Tanji Shore and Tanji Fish Market.

As for guidance, you could either sign up to one of Malick Suso's tours, or hire one of the plentiful guides around the Kotu and Kololi areas - be sure to hire a Government-ratified guide. You will be amazed by their skill and knowledge.
