It wasn't always the case, 20 years ago Serrekunda was little more than a village. Since then it has grown beyond all recognition but with no logical plan for expansion has swallowed up a number of smaller villages on its borders.
It's a noisy and crowded place. Along the main road from Banjul to Basse (Gambia's M1 as our reps like to call it) there are numerous roadside stalls selling hand crafted tables and chairs, shoes, bags, t-shirts, hair extensions plus an increasingly large number of internet cafes. A trip to the market here is always an experience and can be a real culture shock for some Europeans.
